Class Announcements Week of January 23rd-27thWeek of January 23rd - 27th
This week we will intergrate the winter themes of "snowmen" and "winter activities" into our language arts curriculumn. The students will read and listen to literature involving these themes. We will work on writing activites involving the themes and focus on the phoemic skills of blends, digraphs, vowels, syllables, and alphabetizing words. We will also continue with "Fairy Tale Friday". The students will listen to several versions of a fairy tale and then we will analye the different story elements about it ; dramatize and act it out; and make props for retelling the fairy tale. The students will be assessed on a variety of skills this week. We will assess instructional reading levels which includes decoding strategies, fluency, retelling and reflecting on the story. We will also test the students on reading and writing the list #1 and #2 sight words. Finally we will do a mid year assessment on word study to analyze the progress of the students and do a "word spree" to see how many words the students can write from their visual memory. In writing, we will continue to work on writing about our small moment about our holiday break. We will be editing these pieces and will begin to publish our first book. Our math lessons will focus on subtraction strategies,;reviewing coins and their amounts; and practicing counting like coins. We will also continue to work on sorting activities and analying data. We will work in pairs this week to survey the class and create a representation of the data collected. The students usually really enjoy this cooperative learning activity. We have finished up our science unit on Earth and Sun relationships. The students seemed to really enjoy the unit and all did very well on the assessment.
